Job Announcement:
Portsmouth Fire Department is staffed by 47 Career Firefighter/EMT’s, 1 full-time Fire Chief, 1 full-time Assistant Chief, 4 full-time Battalion Chiefs, 5 full-time Captains, 8-full-time Lieutenant, 24 full-time Firefighters and 4 full-time Civilian Emergency Dispatchers. The Portsmouth Fire Department provides fire suppression, ALS medical service, marine, and water rescue as well as technical rescue services. All of the line firefighters are Advanced Life Support emergency medical technicians that provide fulltime advanced life support services with two ALS medical rescues and one ALS fire engine. Many of the department members are certified in various types of technical rescue disciplines; including high angle rescue, trench rescue, confined space rescue, water rescue, and hazardous materials. Fire prevention is staffed by one full-time Fire Marshal who provides life safety inspections, occupancy inspections as well as fire prevention educational service to the community.
Portsmouth Fire Department Emergency Dispatchers handle all emergent and non-emergent phone calls, 911 emergency lines and handle all radio communications for the Portsmouth Fire Department the regional control center - East Bay Control.
Emergency Dispatchers work a 24 on, 48 off, 24 on, 96 off work schedule. 1 Emergency Dispatcher is assigned to each line group.
Emergency Dispatchers are members of the Portsmouth Firefighters Local 1949 and have a current contract through June 30, 2027.
