HIRING EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to perform equipment operation and manual labor in the maintenance and repair of County roads, right of way, street signs, and other assigned projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs a combination of manual and semi-skilled labor and equipment operation for the purpose of maintaining and repairing County roads, right of way and related structures. Assigned projects may include repairing, maintaining and constructing roads; painting roadway markings and lane lines; digging ditches; installing driveway pipes; repairing and maintaining street signs, other markings and right of way structures; patching potholes; sweeping and clearing streets and right of way; and mowing grass.
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including dump trucks, tractors, compactors, chain saws, front end loaders, rakes, shovels, mowers, pipe wrenches, pick axes, and carpenter’s tools.
- Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies; hauls gravel and other materials, and removes work-site and street debris; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles; and notifies supervisor of needed replacements and repairs.
- Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by up to one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving equipment operation and roadway maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of hire.

- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of obtaining information or clarifying details. Performs such within well established policies, procedures and standards.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, or traffic hazards.
