Fire District No. 1 is a full-service department that provides fire suppression, advanced life support ambulance service, fire inspection, public fire education programs, emergency preparedness, fire investigative services, and a dive team to our community and our surrounding neighbors. Fire District No.1 covers 2/3rd of the Town of South Hadley. The population of the district is approximately 12,000 residents. Our annual call volume averages around 2400 EMS calls and 550 fire calls.
We are a combination department, with 26 full-time Firefighters/EMT's, consisting of EMT Basics and Paramedics, along with 20 call Firefighters/EMT-B. We provide service not only to Fire Districts No. 1, but to our neighboring Fire District No. 2 and surrounding cities and towns. We maintain our Headquarters with one (1) Engine, one (1) Tower Ladder, one (1) Quint, three (3) ALS ambulances, one (1) Rescue Truck, and one (1) Brush Truck.
Fire District 1 also provides water emergency responses with our 20 ft and 12ft Zodiac water rescue boat.

Rich in history and culture, diverse in recreational opportunities, and convenient to shopping and highways, South Hadley is an inviting and charming community. While South Hadley offers a wide range of opportunities and services, the people make the community a warm and welcoming place to live and to visit. With a population of approximately 17,300, the community has a density of only 945 persons per square mile. Some areas are more developed than others, but South Hadley has considerable open space for its residents and visitors to enjoy.
Over the past several decades, South Hadley has grown at a steady pace of approximately 500 persons per decade. We are projected to continue this steady growth.
Reflecting the shifting demographics in the country and the state, South Hadley also has an aging population. From 1980 to 2000, the elderly population (65+) grew from 12% to 17.4% of the population. At the same time, the school-age population (under 20 years of age) experienced a decline as a share of the total population.
