Community Service Officer

Western New England University is a picturesque private New England university located -in the 16-Acres section of Springfield, Massachusetts. The University offers a generous compensation and benefits package that includes tuition remission for full-time employees and their immediate family members. We are currently looking for a qualified individual to serve as a Community Service Officer.

The Western New England University Police Department is an accredited police department comprised of (18) certified full-time sworn police officers, (6) civilian Community Service Officers, (4) civilian Dispatchers, and (12) civilian Security Staff Assistants. 

Community Service Officers:

- Perform all Dispatcher Duties within the Dispatch Center.

- Perform periodic patrols of buildings and grounds of the University.

- Physically check exterior doors, windows, etc. to determine that they are secure. 

- Patrol the campus in a university patrol vehicle.

- Operate two-way radio and other electronic equipment while patrolling grounds. 

- Write incident reports.

- Operate and monitor CCTV cameras, computerized access security systems at University buildings and houses, access system and emergency phone monitor system.

- Provide courtesy escorts and walk students between various locations on campus as requested.

- Assist with the response to fire alarms, contacting necessary personnel such as fire and police departments, ambulance services as requested by onsite supervisors.

- Assist University Police staff investigating complaints and other situations.

- Enforce parking regulations. Issue parking and warning tickets to violators. 

- Assist with response to all emergencies, medical, fire, etc. and the completion of necessary paperwork. Must be able to administer C.P.R. and basic first aid. 

- Community Service Officers may be assigned to work with a group from the university community.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Candidates will be expected to pass an extensive background check
  • Successfully pass a Psychological exam
  • Have an acceptable driving record
  • Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license
  • Must be able to obtain certification as a Massachusetts First Responder 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Western New England University Department of Public Safety provides protection to the campus community and its properties with the primary goal of the Community Service Officers working with the University Police Department in accomplishing this mission. 

Preference will be given to those candidates with prior Public Safety experience.
