GENERAL DUTIES

Some of the essential duties of a Wayne Township Police Officer include the following:

  • Patrol an assigned area
  • Respond to, take charge of, maintain order by directly controlling the scene in any emergency situation
  • Prepare and submit precise reports on investigations, arrests, motor vehicle crashes, and other police matters
  • Protect life, property, and the rights of citizens by enforcing State laws and County and Municipal ordinances

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be appointed as a Wayne Township Police Officer, applicants must meet the following minimum standards, which must be met on or before the established date of the test.

Only those individuals currently possessing a valid New Jersey Police Training Commission Certification and who have completed the Basic Course for Police Officers (“BCPO”), or who have completed the Police Training Commission (“PTC”) Basic Course for Police Officers (Alternate Route Program) and are eligible for PTC Certification upon date of hire.

In addition:

He/she shall be a citizen of the United States.

  1. He/she shall possess formal education or training as evidenced by a senior high school graduation certificate or an equivalency certificate.
  2. He/she shall possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education.
  3. He/she must not have been convicted of any crime of the first, second, third or fourth degree, as designated by the Criminal Code of New Jersey, or a crime or felony offense in any other jurisdiction that involved moral turpitude or, at the time of application, is undergoing or awaiting court action of any kind in regard to such a crime or felony offense.

 

Resident of New Jersey with a valid New Jersey Driver’s License

  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age and not more than 35 years of age at the time of appointment. 
  • Fluent in English
  • Healthy both physically and mentally
  • Of good moral character, with no convictions for a criminal offenses involving moral turpitud

SELECTION CRITERIA (FOR ALL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES):

  1. Oral Examination (min score of 80% to move onto Physical Agility portion)
  2. Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement (Pass/Fail) The top 50 candidates who have successfully passed the oral phase will progress to the Physical Agility Phase
  3. Complete Background Investigation (Pass/Fail)
  4. Medical Examination (Pass/Fail)
  5. Psychological Examination (Pass/Fail)
  6. Drug Testing Through Urinalysis (Pass/Fail)

 


APPLICANT PREFERENCE

In accordance with the Stipulation of Settlement entered into with the NAACP, preference in recruitment and hiring of police officers shall be given to residents of Passaic, Essex, Bergen, Morris and Sussex Counties (combined) over nonresidents of those counties.


ORAL EXAMINATION

Oral Examination Location: TBA

Oral Examination Date and Time:  June 7th-8th, 2022. Time is TBA

Must present a government issued photo identification showing current address. No one will be admitted without proper identification.

No electronic devices will be permitted into the examination area. 

The Oral Examination will be administered by the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police.

  • There will be no make-up dates for the Oral Examination nor changing of appointments
  • Applicants will receive notification of their Oral Examination scores via email

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATION/SWIM REQUIREMENT

The top 50 candidates who  successfully pass the  Oral Examination Phase with a score of 80 or higher will progress to the Physical Agility/ Swim Test Phase.  

Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement will be administered on a date to be determined

The top 50 candidates will be notified by email if they qualify for this phase of the testing process.

All other candidates who have successfully completed the oral examination phase but are not in the top 50 will be maintained on the appropriate list and may be called at a future time to be tested in the Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement.

The Physical Agility/Swim Test is based on the New Jersey Police Training Commission Physical Requirements.

The Physical Qualification Test (PQT) Battery will consist of the following timed tests: Push Ups, Sit Ups, and 1.5 Mile Run, 300 Meter Run and Vertical Jump. Applicants unable to pass the PQT will be disqualified from the selection process.  This section of the test is pass/fail; no points will be given.

The Swim Test will consist of the following tests: Swim 50 yards any stroke without touching the bottom of the pool. Tread water for five (5) continuous minutes.
