The Ayer Fire Department is seeking applications for up to one (1) Full Time Firefighter/Paramedic.
Firefighter / Paramedics for the Town of Ayer are responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service received by the Ayer Shirley Regional Emergency Communications Center, ensuring the safety and security of the citizens, businesses, and property of the Town. The scope of responsibilities includes controlling and extinguishing fires, engaging in search and rescue for the preservation of life and property, responding to all medical emergencies and administering life saving measures as defined by the State Department of Health and Human Services protocols for a certified paramedic, performing fire prevention and code enforcement, investigations, and general calls for service. Firefighter / Paramedics are also responsible for maintaining apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds as needed. Firefighter / Paramedics are responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations and other written directives relevant to the operation of the Ayer Fire Department.
All candidates must possess: A High school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, MA EMT-Paramedic certification as well as complete and pass: Written exam (MA OEMS Treatment Protocols & 12 Lead Interpretation), an oral interview, a comprehensive background investigation, and an HRD Medical Examination for Initial-Hire. Pro Board Firefighter I & II certification is preferred but not required.
Candidates who are selected must also complete and pass the Department’s Orientation Program, one-year probationary period, and be credentialed as a paramedic with the department's Medical Control Physician. Selected candidates for the position of Firefighter / Paramedic are required to meet the requirements of Chapter 41, Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws. This requires that members refrain from the smoking of tobacco products for the duration of their employment. A Firefighter / Paramedic is also required within one year to reside within 20 miles of the Town of Ayer, measured from town border to town border.
The Firefighter / Paramedic is a unionized position of the Ayer Fire Fighters Local #2544 and is subject to all clauses within the contract between the Town of Ayer and the Union. Starting yearly salary is (as of 7/1/2023) $61,349.05 - $63,079.05. Along with a very competitive salary package, the Ayer Fire Department offers a wide variety of excellent and competitive benefits: a 24/72hr schedule, a AS 6%, BS 10%, MS 14% education incentive, education reimbursement, 75/25 Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Incentive Time, 2 weeks of vacation, 15 sick hours per month, family sick days, $1,225 in clothing allowance, incremental longevity pay after 5 years, as well as other incentives.
