SUMMARY

The Sergeant is responsible for supervision and direction of assigned staff, as well as providing rescue, fire suppression, and Emergency Medical Response.  

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

MAJOR DUTIES

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.  

  • Responds to emergency calls for fire, rescue, and EMS.
  • Responsible for firefighter training.
  • Responsible for supervision of assigned staff.
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of firetrucks.
  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of fire station.
  • Responsible for operation of specialized firefighting equipment.
  • Supervise, operate, and mitigate emergency scenes as incident commander.
  • Emergency medical first response performing patient assessments and treating patients.
  • Completion of daily paperwork, including incident reports.
  • Scheduling fire and public safety classes and events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLs, & ABILITIES

The Sergeant must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts: 

  • Thorough knowledge of fire science and fire department administration .
  • Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards .
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to commercial and noncommercial vehicles.
  • Knowledge of state and national training requirements.
  • Knowledge of emergency response procedures to fire, emergency medical, rescue, extrication, and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Knowledge of National Incident Reporting System.
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, email, etc., as well as specialized databases pertaining to fire and EMS.
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including computer, copier, scanner, fax machine, calculator, and typewriter.
  • Skilled in the operation of fire apparatus and specialized power equipment.
  • Ability to direct others and properly document incidents.
  • Ability to use two-way communication equipment.
  • Ability to meet physical fitness standards set by state law.
  • Ability to build and maintain firetrucks and ability to maintain firefighting equipment.

TRAINING &/OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED

High school degree or GED, associate degree preferred in emergency management, emergency services, fire prevention and suppression, or a related field, supplemented by four or more years of progressively responsible experience in fire suppression, including managing staff and resources required. Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite skills, knowledge, and abilities for the position.

  • Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with emergency vehicle driver’s endorsement, CDL Class A License with Passenger Endorsement 
  • Georgia State Firefighters Certification
  • NPQ Fire Firefighter I and II Certification
  • NPQ Fire Officer I Certification
  • NPQ Fire Instructor I Certification
  • Emergency Medical Responder training
  • National Incident Management System Certification
  • Emergency Responder Certification
  • Juvenile Fire Setter Specialist I and II Certification
  • Child Safety Seat Technician Certification
  • Hazardous Materials Certification
  • FEMA National Incident Management Certification 

SUPERVISORY CONTROL & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of the full-time and temporary firefighters as assigned.  

TRAVEL

Travel throughout Peach County, nearby jurisdictions, and the State of Georgia required.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Language Skills 
Ability to read and understand written materials. Ability to effectively communicate information to supervisors, coworkers, and the general public. 

Mathematical Skills 
Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to calculate decimals and percentages and interpret graphs. 

Communication Skills 
Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner in order to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service. In addition, this position requires extensive contact with other employees, the general public, and public officials, often involving problem-solving circumstances. 

Reasoning Ability 
Ability to interpret and understand a variety of forms, reports, manuals, regulations, and other means of instruction and guidance.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Requires periods of physical exertion and manual labor including but not limited to, lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing. Requires kneeling, bending, climbing, and reaching. Must work indoors and outdoors. Must work in conditions where there may be fumes or dust. This position requires the use of tools and equipment which require a high degree of dexterity. 

Work Environment 
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The work environment ranges from an indoor office area to hazardous conditions. Work is performed in very noisy places with exposure to dust, dirt, grease, smoke, fumes, irritating and toxic chemicals, and machinery and moving parts. This position is also required to work outdoors regardless of weather. The work environment requires the use of protective devices and equipment due to the operation of the hazardous nature of working in an emergency with exposure to vibrating equipment, machinery and sharp tools, high voltage equipment, traveling at high rates of speed and working in high places. The employee may be required to be on call 24 hours per day.
