The Town of Hamden, HPD and Our Community

The Town of Hamden is a diverse community with approximately 62,000 residents, located in New Haven County Connecticut.  The town covers 34 square miles and features urban, suburban and rural areas. The Hamden Police Department provides public safety and law enforcement services for the Town of Hamden while collaborating with our collective community (police, residents, business/organizations, government, universities, and schools) acting together as a unified force to prevent crime, promote safety, and improve society.

The position of Certified Police Officer

The position of a Hamden Police Officer involves the responsibility for the protection of life and property; the prevention, detection and investigation of crime; and for maintaining law and order while respecting the individual rights guarantee by the State of Connecticut and United States Constitutions. Assignments are received from superior officers and are carried out in accordance with established police rules and procedures. Police Officers must use their own judgement and frequently act without supervision in managing emergencies. Hamden Police Officers are expected to act as role models, mentors, mediators and community partners within our diverse communities, while portraying the highest moral and ethical standards. 

The Hamden Police Department is currently budgeted to employ 105 sworn police officers. Civilian personnel assigned to various divisions supplement the department’s authorized strength of sworn officers. The department offers successful applicants the opportunity to advance his / her career and personal goals in positions within specialized units, advanced training and certifications.

Salary

  • Sworn Certified Police Officer Salary Range of $88,119.43 - $96,057.76 (After 2 years)

Requirements

Only Connecticut POSTC Certified Police Officers (C.G.S. 7-294d) with a minimum of 2 years certification (2 years from completion of Field Training (FTO) and all POSTC requirements) may apply. Certified Applicants must attach copies of their CT-POSTC certification and a valid driver’s license to the application.

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid Connecticut State driver’s license.
  • United States Citizenship.
  • A High School diploma or equivalent.
  • The ability to perform the essential tasks required of a Police Officer.

Selection Process

The Civil Service / Personnel Department of the Town of Hamden with the assistance of the Hamden Police Department, work cooperatively in administering the testing process while adhering to all Civil Service rules and regulations.

Upon successful completion of the police applicant written and oral examination tests, fitness standards, medical examination, background investigation and a selection process; the Hamden Board of Police Commissioners may make appointments to the position of Probationary Police Officer.
