PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The Accounting Technician is responsible for providing financial, administrative and clerical services in order to ensure effective, efficient and accurate financial and administrative operations. The Accounting Technician must comply with applicable local, state and federal regulations and accepted accounting principles and procedures.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The following functions are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

Receives and verifies invoices, prepare invoices for batch entering, processes accounts payable batches and prints checks, prepares back up reports, prepares vendor checks for mailing, prepares bank account transfers.

 

Processes data to generate employee paychecks; verifies accuracy of employee withholdings, processes tax related transactions, makes FLSA computations and other payroll related activities, and ensures compliance with local, state and federal requirements.

 

Maintains records of payroll deductions including child support, garnishments, and bankruptcies; responds to the courts based on payroll schedule for garnishments and bankruptcies.

 

Assists in preparing annual W2 forms and 1099’s; assists in the annual preparation of the Audit; assists in the annual preparation for the Budget.

 

Prepares travel and accommodation checks and travel advances for staff

 

Receives revenue and prepares receipts; data entry of all revenues into the automated financial system.

 

Scans documents; files documents; assists with maintaining a variety of spreadsheets.

 

Greets and assists visitors; answers phones; directs calls and responds to inquiries.

 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Completion of high school education or GED, supplemented with a minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible experience in a financial environment involving governmental finance and accounting programs, policies, and procedures, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  Well versed in the use of Microsoft Suite, internet research and web-based reporting. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the action of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

 

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, deceptive, and/or advisory data and information.

 

Mathematical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/ or interpret graphs.

 

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral, or diagrammatic form.  Involves semi-routine/routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

 

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

 

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects of light to medium weight (15-35 pounds).  Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

 

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

 

Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
