TITLE: HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy construction equipment and trucks in the maintenance and repair of County roads, right of way, street signs, and other assigned projects. Positions in this class specialize in operating County motor graders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Drives and operates heavy construction equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads, right of way, roadway structures, and other Public Works projects. Assigned projects may include repairing, maintaining and constructing roads; painting roadway markings and lane lines; clearing catch basins; installing and repairing driveways and driveway pipes; repairing and maintaining street signs, other markings and right of way structures; and patching potholes.
Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment and trucks, to include motor graders, back hoes, rollers, varied construction trucks, back hoes, track-hoes, track loaders, bush cutters, rollers, and tractors.
Performs semi-skilled and manual labor to complete assigned road projects; and uses varied hand and power tools such as shovels, chain saws, post drivers, power saws, mechanic’s tools, and rakes.
Picks up and transports materials, tools and supplies; hauls gravel and other materials, and removes work-site and street debris; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles; and notifies supervisor of needed replacements and repairs.
Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years experience operating heavy construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of obtaining information or clarifying details. Performs such within well established policies, procedures and standards.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment and machinery, requiring the monitoring, adjustment, regulation, and/or setting of multiple conditions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, or traffic hazards.
