Position: Paramedic

The Town of Suffield is a quintessential New England town with a longstanding pledge to preserving its historic architecture and agricultural roots. The Town of Suffield is seeking a Paramedic to join the growing team at Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association. The position is responsible for the administration of pre-hospital emergency care and other forms of related health care, education, and medical transportation. Administers advanced life support and is responsible for the clinical oversight of all emergency and non-emergency incidents including the appropriate direction of EMT staff and choreography of co-responders at any specific incident in the absence of an EMS Operations Officer.

Serves the residents and visitors of Suffield in customer-oriented manner that helps promote a positive, professional image for the Town government.

 

Supervision Received:

Receives general direction from the Chief of Emergency Medical Services.

 

Supervision Given:

This position has no direct reports but is responsible for the clinical oversight of assigned crew members during all emergency and non-emergency incidents in the absence of an EMS Operations Officer.

 

Examples of Essential Functions:

  1. Operates specially equipped vehicles to respond to medical emergencies and provides advanced life support services to stabilize persons with life threatening problems resulting from trauma or other medical emergencies.
  2. Provides emergency medical services to accident or other emergency victims such as extrication, splinting and immobilization, administration of oxygen, suctioning, insertion of airways, hemostasis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency childbirth, electrocardiogram monitoring, injections, defibrillation, etc.
  3. Monitors and transmits vital signs of pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and respiration and transmits bio-medical information via telemetry such as electrocardiogram.
  4. Performs direct medical interventions on persons requiring advanced emergency services such as defibrillation.
  5. Administers oral, intra-muscular, intra-nasal, intra-venous and intraosseous medications as directed by protocols and/or on-line medical direction.
  6. Completes accurate and timely documentation of emergency calls, patient treatment and problems encountered, and solutions rendered in the course of duty.
  7. Maintains equipment on specially equipped medical emergency vehicles in appropriate operating condition.
  8. Participates in emergency medical training of other EMS personnel, police officers, fire fighters and members of the community and coordinates emergency medical services on site.
  9. Conducts initial scene assessments and coordinates medical resources on the scene of incidents.
  10. Assists the Chief or designee with public information/education activities.
  11. Conducts in-service training, under the supervision of the Chief or Designee.
  12. Maintains stations in good condition, to include all aspects of maintaining cleanliness of all areas which the employee has access to.
  13. Regular and punctual attendance.
  14. Maintain positive working relationships with school officials, community groups, and the public regarding program offerings and coordination of services; promptly and cordially respond to citizen inquiries, feedback, and complaints about services and facilities.
  15. Attend seminars and conferences to remain current on developments in relevant fields.
  16. Attends and participates in the association’s quality assurance & improvement (QA/QI) program to include one on one meetings with QA/QI coordinator.

Other Job Functions:

  1. Perform other related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  1. High school graduation or possession of GED.
  2. Current license as a State of Connecticut Paramedic.
  3. National Registry certification at the Paramedic level preferred.
  4. Currently authorized to practice as a paramedic through a Connecticut sponsor hospital.
  5. Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support.
  6. Current certification in American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  7. Current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  8. ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 certifications.
  9. Possession and maintenance of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and an acceptable driving record.
  10. Highly Desirable: Minimum of one (1) years’ work experience (or two (2) years volunteer experience) as a Paramedic.
  11. Suitable experience may be substituted for education attainment if deemed appropriate by the First Selectman.

All licenses and certifications must be valid at time of application, hiring and throughout employment. Maintenance of these valid licenses and certifications in addition to the maintenance of active medical control by the agencies medical control oversight agency is a condition of employment.

At the time of appointment and during employment, Paramedics must meet or exceed medical and physical standards established by Suffield Volunteer Ambulance.  Incumbent Paramedics must continue to meet or exceed all requirements for maintenance of State of Connecticut Paramedic license for the duration of employment with the Town. 

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability:

  1. Thorough knowledge of emergency medical conditions, techniques, and procedures.
  2. Good social skills and general intelligence.
  3. Good powers of observation.
  4. Ability to operate bio-medical telemetry and two-way radio equipment.
  5. Ability to perform calmly and efficiently in crisis situations.
  6. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports using a computer.
  7. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  8. Ability to understand written laws and apply them to specific situations.
  9. Physical strength adequate to lift unconscious patients.
  10. Ability to operate assigned vehicle in emergency driving conditions.
  11. Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and assigned shifts.
  12. Willingness to work with unpaid volunteers who will be performing the same functions as paid personnel.
  13. Willingness to assist in training activities for both paid and volunteer personnel.
  14. Willingness not to smoke during "on duty" hours.
  15. Willingness to maintain vehicles, equipment, and station in good condition.
  16. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Special Requirements:   

  1. Must submit to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as well as fitness for duty testing.

Tools and Equipment Used:

AED and manual defibrillator, syringes, needles, oxygen, stretcher, computer, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, and motor vehicle.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, walk hear, stand, lift, drive a motor vehicle, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, devices, or controls: reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to lift, climb, push, or pull objects and injured/ill persons up to 100 pounds. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate vehicles, computers and office and medical equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee will frequently work in a motor vehicle. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places, is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, vibration and electro-magnetic radiation.

The noise level is normally moderate, but will be elevated when sirens are operating.

Employees will work primarily at a station house, on a medical scene, in an ambulance or at a hospital.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This position is at will. Hours worked are based on a rotating day shift (0600-1800) schedule that results in 36 hours in Week 1, 48 hours in Week 2 with every other weekend off.

$28.00 per hour; benefits package to include:
