DURHAM NC POLICE DEPARTMENT

NOW HIRING

POLICE RECRUIT

Sign On Bonus: $5,000

Relocation Bonus: $3,000 for over 100 miles | $2,000 for under 100 miles

TESTING INFORMATION:

The Written Test,  Oral Interview and Physical Ability Test POPAT will take place during the Weekend of June 26 and 27th.

Applicants will be emailed test time(s), date(s), location and details once the application process closes.  Applicants must monitor their email and login to their PoliceApp.com account for information regarding assigned times.   This information can be time sensitive so monitor your account closely to avoid being eliminated from the process

Minimum Requirements

Requirements to become an Officer include:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (GED, HiSET, TASC)
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (Provided upon hire).
  • Have a valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license "or" if you currently have another state driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
  • Completion of high school or equivalency (some college preferred) – Certified transcripts required from both high school and college.
  • Age 20 or older upon completion of classroom training.
  • Must meet vision, hearing, and other physical requirements.
  • Must meet credit standards
  • No felony convictions ever. No serious misdemeanor convictions in the past five years.
  • No Domestic Violence convictions (Federal Law)
  • No DUI, DWI convictions in the last five years.
  • Valid driver's license required, no suspension of driving privileges in the last 3 years and no more than 2 convictions of moving violations in the past three years, or 3 convictions of moving violations in the past five years, or 4 convictions of moving violations in the past seven years.
  • No use of any illegal drugs in the past 12 months
  • Pass an entry level written examination and physical test
  • Pass an extensive background investigation, credit check, criminal history check, drug screen, psychological examination, medical examination, and polygraph examination.
  • Military Personnel must have an honorable discharge.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Naturalized Citizen

Automatic Disqualifiers 

Criminal History

  • Any felony conviction
  • Any conviction for a crime for which the punishment could have been more than 2 years
  • Conviction of 1 or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class B misdemeanors within the preceding 5 years
  • Conviction of 2 or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class A misdemeanors within the preceding 5 years

 

Traffic Violations

  • Having a driver's license suspended or revoked in the 3 years before making an application or at any time after the date of application; entering a plea of no contest, being convicted, or receiving a prayer for judgment continued for a traffic offense which may result in the suspension or revocation of driving privileges
  • A DUI or DWI conviction within the past 5 years
  • 2 or more accidents in which the applicant was charged and convicted within the preceding 3 years
  • 3 or more convictions of moving violations or the accumulation of 8 points using the North Carolina point system within the preceding 3 years
  • 4 or more convictions of moving violations within the preceding 5 years
  • 5 or more convictions of moving violations within the preceding 7 years

 

Drugs

  • Applicants who are 24 years or younger should not have used marijuana in the past 12 months
  • Applicants who are 25 years of age should not have used marijuana in the past 2 years
  • Applicants who are 26 years of age should not have used marijuana in the past 3 years
  • Applicants who are 27 years of age should not have used marijuana in the past 4 years
  • Applicants who are 28 years of age or older should not have used marijuana in the past 5 years.

 

Credit

  • Demonstrated history of financial irresponsibility 


Other

  • Military personnel must have an honorable discharge and must be eligible for re-enlistment
  • Untruthfulness or the intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position
  • Deliberate inaccuracies or incomplete statements
  • Cheating on any examination or testing associated with the position


Hiring Process

Applicants proceed through the following hiring process:

  1. Written test
  2. Structured Oral Process (SOP)
  3. Physical fitness testing
  4. Oral review board
  5. First selection
  6. Background investigation
  7. Final selection
  8. Conditional offer followed by medical screening, psychological evaluation, polygraph exam and drug screening
  9. Job offer / hire date
