Detention Deputy - Sponsorship
The Walton County Sheriff's Office is always seeking motivated and forward-thinking individuals to join our team. Part of that mission involves finding and developing relationships with candidates who share our common goal to provide excellent service to our community.
We do offer sponsorship for those in the beginning stages of their Corrections careers. To qualify for sponsorship, candidates must complete an employment application to be a Detention Deputy - Sponsorship. Once your application has been processed, you must successfully pass our hiring process, be granted a conditional job offer, and then be selected for sponsorship.
JOB SUMMARY:
Detention Deputies are often referred to as Correctional Officers. At Walton County Sheriff's Office, these sworn members work directly with inmates to maintain order and provide for the security, care, and direct supervision of inmates in housing units, at meals, during recreation, on work assignments, and during all other phases of activity in a correctional facility. WCSO Jail requires staffing on a 24/7 basis, which requires employees to work shift work; working weekends and holidays is often required. At WCSO, Detention Deputies work 12-hour shifts in secure areas, allowing them to be off every other weekend. Shift assignments are based on the needs of the agency. Non-Certified applications will be hired at 10% less than the certified rate, $33,750 until certified. Detention Deputies are sworn members who are eligible for high-risk retirement benefits as well as education incentive payments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must possess the following qualifications:
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Be a United States Citizen
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid FL driver's license with a good driving history
- Have a good moral character and be drug-free, in accordance with agency policy
- Pass a background investigation which includes all items described on the agency's automatic disqualification list, such as no felony convictions, no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, no convictions or injunctions for domestic violence, no dishonorable discharge from any branch of the of the United States Armed Forces, etc.

HIRING PROCESS:
Failure to complete required paperwork correctly will cause a delay in the application process and applications to potentially be placed in an "on-hold" status. Applicants will be required to successfully complete:
- Background Investigation, which includes, but is not limited to: criminal history, driving history, credit check, previous employment verification. The background waiver MUST BE SIGNED AND NOTARIZED.
- Polygraph Examination
- Panel Interview
- Pre-employment Drug Screen (including nicotine panel)
- Physical Abilities Test
