The Oelwein Police Department has launched a recruitment process to fill vacancies for the position of sworn police officer. Certified officers are preferred but this is not a requirement at the time of hiring. The process will remain open until all vacancies have been filled.

The Oelwein Police Department is a Civil Service Department and falls under the Municipal Fire and Police Retirement System of Iowa.

Successful candidates must be:

  • 21 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by a two year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field, or
  • Have three years’ experience as a full time certified police officer, or
  • Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The City of Oelwein offers a salary and fringe benefit package including a pension with the MFPRSI. As of July 1, 2020, starting salary is $51,147 (annually) for an Iowa certified police officer with one year experience. Effective July 1, 2021, certified officers starting annual wage is $52,685. After one year, if a candidate is hired as a certified officer, the annual  wage (effective July 1, 2022) is $56,846. A candidate that is hired and is a non-certified officer has a starting wage of $46,675. Effective July 1, 2021, a non-certified officer's wage is $48,068.  Additionally, lateral transfers receive a $2,500 incentive pay after completion of a probationary period.
